MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A former Alabama lawmaker on Tuesday pleaded guilty to a voter fraud charge that he rented a closet-sized space in a home to fraudulently run for office in a district where he did not live. Political Cartoons View All 1206 ImagesAlabama law requires candidates to live in a legislative district for one year before they run for office. Cole signed the lease for the space two days after a redistricting plan was enacted that placed the home where Cole had lived since 2014 in another House district. HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama public library mistakenly added a children's picture book to a list of potentially inappropriate titles because the author's last name is "Gay," the library's director said. “Read Me a Story, Stella,” a children’s picture book by Canadian author Marie-Louise Gay, was added to a list of books flagged for potential removal from the children’s section of the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library because of “sexually explicit” content. The book was one of 233 books set to be reviewed and potentially moved. Political Cartoons View All 1205 ImagesThat process was halted following public backlash, the news outlet reported. A judge sentenced a 19-year-old in Nebraska to 90 days in jail after she took abortion pills. Celeste Burgess, 19, pleaded guilty to "concealing or abandoning a dead body." Burgess was sentenced by Madison County District Judge James Kube on Thursday to two years of probation, according to the Norfolk Daily News. Jessica pleaded guilty to concealing a dead body, performing an abortion beyond 20 weeks, and misdemeanor false reporting and is scheduled to be sentenced in September, according to the outlet. A Nebraska teenager who used abortion pills to terminate her pregnancy was sentenced on Thursday to 90 days in jail after she pleaded guilty earlier this year to illegally concealing human remains. The teenager, Celeste Burgess, 19, and her mother, Jessica Burgess, 42, were charged last year after the police obtained their private Facebook messages, which showed them discussing plans to end the pregnancy and “burn the evidence.”Prosecutors said the mother had ordered abortion pills online and had given them to her daughter in April 2022, when Celeste Burgess was 17 and in the beginning of the third trimester of her pregnancy. The two then buried the fetal remains themselves, the police said. Jessica Burgess pleaded guilty in July to violating Nebraska’s abortion law, furnishing false information to a law enforcement officer and removing or concealing human skeletal remains. She faces up to five years in prison at her sentencing on Sept. 22, according to Joseph Smith, the top prosecutor in Madison County, Neb.

Ray Walker had been receiving gender-affirming care in the state where he lives, and now can't. AP Photo/Rogelio V. SolisAt least 20 states have enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming care for trans minors, though several are embroiled in legal challenges. Opponents of gender-affirming care say there's no solid proof of purported benefits, cite widely discredited research and say children shouldn't make life-altering decisions they might regret. Then the broad effort in conservative states to restrict gender-affirming care set its sights on Mississippi. "Most people in Mississippi cannot afford to just move to another state or even go to another state for care."

In what could be a plot from an episode of “The X-Files,” the authorities are investigating the mysterious deaths in three Texas counties of six cattle that were found with their tongues missing. Ranchers found the mutilated remains of a 6-year-old longhorn-cross cow on their property, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook Wednesday. The office did not say when the cow was discovered but said a “straight, clean cut, with apparent precision, had been made” to remove the hide around its mouth on one side. The meat under the removed hide was untouched, and the cow’s tongue was gone with no blood spilled, the office said.

Hunt is a naturalized citizen born in Iran, according to the indictment. He is also known as Abdolrahman Hantoosh, Rahman Hantoosh and Rahman Natoosh. Former President Bill Clinton signed an executive order in 1995 prohibiting certain transactions related to Iran's petroleum resources. The drag show at a Tennessee pride festival will go on Saturday — but not in the way organizers had planned it. Darin Hollingsworth, a Jackson Pride Committee member, said organizers were “horribly disappointed,” because they know local LGBTQ youths would have felt supported at the drag performance. “But we will be in contempt if we even allow parents to bring in their child, so we won’t.”Hollingsworth said the pride event had been in the works for a year, and Jackson Pride had advertised it repeatedly. The event began to face backlash after a Sept. 17 Facebook post from Republican state Rep. Chris Todd. As a result, the Jackson Pride Committee decided to move the festival, including the drag show, into the Civic Center and to increase security measures by, among other things, having a metal detector.
